Project Reflection
In this project, I first learned about the hero's journey and the intricacies of it. We also learned about the shadow journey and rites of passage. We also read The Alchemist and Siddhartha. The hero's journey or the concept that all stories follow a uniform set of similar events. Formally there are 12 stages in the Hero's journey as portrayed by Joseph Campbell. Some of those stages include The Call, The Threshold, The Abyss, Apotheosis, The Return Threshold, and Rejoining Community. The shadow journey is when you deny the call from the hero's journey. Then you travel along a darkened road of the shadow journey when you deny your dream and are constantly haunted by it. In this journey, you go through the stages of the denial of your personal hero’s journey. I also learned the many similarities between rites of passage and the hero’s journey designed by Joseph Campbell. An example of this is found in various tribal rites of passage where the goal is to transform from a boy to a man. In most, you must leave the safety of the village, and survive out in the woods by yourself for an extended period of time and return spiritually and physically changed into a (man). We also read the Alchemist an old all time favorite book of mine. The goal of reading this book was to learn about and identify the hero's journey in the context of the book. The Alchemist is a book about Santiago a boy who travels on a journey to complete his personal legend which is the only true goal in our life. Along the way, Santiago goes through many of the stages of the Hero's Journey. I thought that this book was a very easy read, but also very exemplary of the Hero's Journey. We also read a book called Siddhartha, and this book was also to help familiarize ourselves with identifying the Hero's Journey within stories. This book was one interpretation by Herman Hesse about what the transformation and journey of the Siddhartha Buddha were. This was a significantly more challenging read partly because the text in the book was smaller, and also because it used a far bigger vocabulary to tell the story accurately and intelligently. The book Siddhartha was also very exemplary of the Hero's Journey. This Book was also an eye-opening book for me because of my want of understanding but lack of knowledge of the start of Buddhism.
After most of the content work of this project what we did was research how best we could apply it to ourselves. I also think that throughout this project I have grown in many ways such as my ability to compose and refine a story to formal storytelling quality. I also have improved my ability to give critical yet helpful feedback to help my peers further improve their stories to exhibition quality work. I at first in this project was scrambling for the first week and a half to come up with a story worth telling, and one of relatability for the audience. Then I came up with a story that was originally meant as a stopgap story as all my others were before it, but then after having gone through just a few of the refinement processes that Ally had our class do. My story was starting to take so much shape it was now impossible to back out and start again. Before I knew it I had presented it to the whole class for the first time, and then to my surprise favored it for its comical factor. I then somehow I was peer pressured into putting my name into the storytelling hat. I also have through seeing many of my peer's stories learned what to look for as far a critique. Overall I think that I have grown to be able to in the future identify what to look for in good storytelling, and will better my life if I ever become a book writer or storyteller.
From this project, I believe that it has had a very educational and confidence boosting effect on me. I have learned what attributes truly make up a hero. I have learned how to tell compose and refine a story. I think that a part of this project that will have a long-lasting effect on me is when I got up on that stage and told my story in front of all those people helping to boost my confidence level in the department of presenting in front of lots of people. I think that this is a very beneficial project to introverted people (me). From the perspective of that it is a good project to safely expand our boundaries, and take risks in our weakest area, public speaking. The hero a very fuzzy confusing character mainly defined by Disney movies for us up until, this project. This project has really helped me define what a hero is in the context of stories. A hero is anyone who goes on the transformative journey that is the Hero's Journey.
